Starting out this project, I sketched a skewed home icon surrounding the home-style environment associated with Billy Schu’s Food Bar. This concept set the foundation for my overall icon ideas pertaining to the restaurant.
Incorporating The Signature Billy Club and Shoe
Referencing from Billy Schu’s existing logo( ), I chose to retain the tradition of keeping their signature icons – the billy club and the shoe. Playing with these two, I managed to come up with a few intriguing designs that gave these two objects a role to play.
Taking a look at Billy Schu’s geography on Google Maps( ), its positioning lies between a medium-sized and tall building. Playing off this geography, I sketched iterations in which this set is implemented with a shaded rectangle between two unshaded rectangles.
Ultimately, I chose to stick with the traditional billy club and shoe logo design – a combination the company has had for fifty years. Developing a logo for this restaurant that surrounded itself around billy clubs and a shoe seemed to be a safe bet. With the one above, in particular, I chose to is create borders witht the clubs while the shoe sole acts as a backdrop for the text, which customs the same texture as the clubs.
In regard to my artistic process, there is a lot to be said about the logo I created for Billy Schu’s, a small diner located in Hornell, NY.
First, I had to research all about them. So I started looking to their social media accounts; Facebook showed me a great deal of reviews from customers that helped mold the external identity the restaurant has. Searching them on Youtube now, I found a video of theirs in which the diner’s owners are sat down and interviewed. Feeling them out now, I’m beginning to gain a better understanding as to what Billy Schu’s represents, and how they choose to market themselves to the local customer: through a homey presentation that breeds intimacy and relatibility!
After the research, things became a bit easier from there now, developing the house silhouette for the sake of imagery.
These two logos are my finished products, and I will soon be presenting them to the owners of the restaurant.
